Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music

News: Broadway World >

WEEK TWO— PIVOT! PROGRAM CHANGES ANNOUNCED:
Due to Covid concerns within the orchestra, programming for the closing weekend of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music has shifted. Details are below:

Saturday, August 6, 7pm, Moonlight
Andrea Reinkemeyer:
#@&%!* (expletive deleted)
Valentin Silvestrov: Silent Music
Kevin Puts: Moonlight: Second Concerto for Oboe & Strings (Katherine Needleman, oboe)
Christopher Rouse: Ogoun Badagris

This evening’s program features composer Kevin Puts’ Moonlight, a concerto for oboe and string orchestra inspired by the film and its themes of resilience and compassion. Moonlight features the virtuosic oboe soloist Katherine Needleman, for whom the work is written. Richard Danielpour’s Apparitions for string orchestra and percussion is a collection of pieces inspired by fantasies, dream, and stories of the supernatural. Valentin Silvestrov’s Silent Music for string orchestra is a beautiful work by Ukraine’s most famous living composer, who recently fled the war in Ukraine. The Festival’s superstar percussionists take centerstage in Christopher Rouse’s exhilarating Ogoun Badagris, a work deriving its inspiration from Haitian drumming pattern; and Andrea Reinkemeyer’s percussion quartet entitled #@&%!* (expletive deleted).

"From raucous dances to tenebrous meditations—anything can happen when the moon goes down!

Brazilian choro, Venezuelan joropo, and Argentinian tango intertwine with modern works by Molly Joyce, Andrea Reinkemeyer, and George Crumb in this flute and percussion concert featuring music of the night from across the Americas.

Stand Clear is a project of Riley Palmer and Leo Sussman, dedicated to rambunctiously pluralistic noisemaking. We're delighted to also feature percussionists Dániel Matei and Jonathan Collazo on this concert."

Animal Songs Project, Liz Pearse

Clara

Suggested donation of $10 at the door

Vocalist Liz Pearse has alternately been described as a “badass”, having “a near-psychic understanding of what a composer is trying to accomplish”, and possessing “a voice made of arrows forged in a volcanic pit, transforming the didactic and mundanely intellectual into actual fire”. After a childhood spent playing every instrument she could find, Liz has focused her career on exploring the infinite possibilities of the human voice. Though Liz is known as a specialist in contemporary vocal repertoire, she enjoys a well-aged song.

Liz enjoys work as a solo artist and as a chamber musician, and has performed all over North America (from Canada to Mexico and coast-to-coast in the USA) and in both Europe and the United Kingdom. Liz has commissioned and performed over a dozen works for solo singer/pianist, and the focus of her dissertation, Roger Reynolds’ Sketchbook for The Unbearable Lightness of Being, was recently recorded and released on the double album For a Reason with Neuma Records. Though solo performance and self-accompanying is a large part of her practice, Liz has a voracious appetite for the camaraderie of chamber music, mostly with her quartet Quince and the Damselfly Trio. When she’s not performing, Liz lives and teaches in the beautiful Driftless region of Minnesota. More information about Liz can be found at lizpearse.com
