Wyam: Echo of Falling Water (2009). The Chinook name for the Celilo Falls on the Columbia River is Wyam, meaning "Echo of Falling Water" or "Sound of Water Upon the Rocks." Sadly, this name is rather prophetic because these falls no longer exist due to the erection of The Dalles Dam downstream in the 1950s. These once majestic falls, now drowned, echo back to us even though there is no longer any sign of their existence. Through this work, I imagine what it might have been like to be an observer on that sad day in 1957 when the vigorous falls were drowned.
